As he prepares to sail back to Europe after an unwanted years‑long stay in 16th‑century Brazil, German sailor Hans Staden is seized by a hostile, cannibalistic indigenous tribe. To stay alive, he tells the captors he is not Portuguese—their foe—but a French ally, and warns that their gods would be enraged should they consume him.
