Green Mansions

Rebels overrun Caracas, and a young man named Abel narrowly escapes the city. He resolves to seek revenge for his father, who was the former minister of war and was killed in the conflict. The escape marks the beginning of his perilous journey into the jungle.

After gathering supplies, Abel takes a canoe to the far shore. He is nearly mauled by a jaguar, but native people intervene and save him. They take him to their village, where his survival becomes a subject of the locals.

Abel tells his story to Chief Runi, hoping to justify his presence. The natives are moved by his tale and decide not to kill him. He earns their cautious acceptance by revealing his resolve for vengeance and his courage.

Runi's son Kua-ko, who has lived with missionaries and speaks English, tells Abel that Runi will spare him as long as he harms no one. Abel agrees to abide by the condition and befriends Kua-ko. Kua-ko also warns that the Bird Woman and the forest itself are dangerous.

Ignoring the warning, Abel ventures into the forest. He glimpses a young woman who quickly disappears, leaving him unsettled and curious. The encounter hints at a deeper danger that lies ahead.

The young woman from the forest tends Abel’s coral-snake wound and helps him recover. When he wakes, she is introduced to him by her grandfather Nuflo, who reveals that her name is Rima. A quiet bond begins to form as Abel learns more about his mysterious savior.

As Abel heals, he and Rima speak and he realizes he has started to love her. Rima is initially confused by her feelings. Nuflo cautions that Abel may leave once his leg is fully healed.

When Abel regains mobility, Rima shows him the forest’s wonders and shares more about her memory of Riolama. She seeks guidance from a village elder to understand their growing feelings. The two travel toward the forest’s edge toward Riolama.

Abel returns to the village to tell Chief Runi how Rima saved him, but neither Runi nor Kua-ko believes him. He then uncovers the truth that Kua-ko killed his brother and framed Rima for it. The revelation isolates Abel from the natives.

Kua-ko orders a bravery test and the natives prepare to enter the forest to kill Rima. Abel escapes and warns Nuflo and Rima, and they flee to Riolama. The mass conflict marks a turning point in Abel’s alliance with the natives.

In Riolama, Nuflo admits his part in the massacre and Abel’s guilt about it. Rima overhears and curses Nuflo, prompting her to rush toward her homeland in distress. The emotional confrontation reveals the past that haunts them.

Abel follows and saves Rima after she faints from the heat. He tells her he loves her, and she returns the feeling, acknowledging their bond despite the danger around them. The moment cements their relationship amid the conflicts.

Rima returns to apologize to Nuflo, only to find their home burned and Nuflo near death. She escapes through the forest as Kua-ko burns the great tree where she hid. Abel wakes, chases Kua-ko into a stream, and drowns him.

Abel remembers a flower that, if it disappears in one place, blossoms in another. He finds the flower and soon spots Rima, who reaches out her hand toward him, signaling a hopeful reunion. Their love persists as the old conflicts fade into memory.
