In 1829, a young and struggling Third Section clerk, Nikolay Gogol, buys and burns his own books due to dissatisfaction with his writing. Plagued by epileptic seizures, his life takes a surprising turn when investigator Yakov Guro observes one of these fits. Guro discovers that Gogol's visions provide insights into solving crimes, and together they investigate a bizarre case in the village of Dikanka. There, they uncover a complex mystery and the secrets the villagers desperately conceal.
