The book behind the movie

Gin Tama, Vol. 11

by Hideaki Sorachi

The live-action film takes Volume 11's missing Katsura, Tetsuko and Tetsuya, Nizo, the living Benizakura sword, Gintoki's injury, Takasugi's Kiheitai, and the opening majority of the arc, while also adapting the beetle hunt from Volume 10 and adding Shinsengumi involvement and self-aware screen jokes. This is the primary relation because it begins and contains most of the film's central plot, but the story does not finish here; Volume 12 is separately connected for the climax rather than pretending one book covers the whole adaptation.
