Francine, on summer break with her girlfriends, spots the surfer Moondoggie and is instantly smitten. He shows little romantic interest at first, and she realizes she cares more about surfing than pursuing boys. The encounter sets the tone for her summer among the waves and the male-dominated surf world.

At home, Francine pleads for a $25 used surfboard for her birthday. Her parents grant the gift, and she rushes back to the beach excited to ride the waves. The new board marks her commitment to surfing as a lifestyle, not just a hobby.

Francine starts hanging with the all-male surfer crew under The Big Kahuna, a worldly veteran who travels the hemisphere surfing. Moondoggie admires Kahuna and hopes to emulate his free-wheeling approach to life. The dynamic introduces Gidget to a male-dominated social world on the shore.

Back home, Francine's father takes charge of her social life and orders her not to see the surfer gang again. Francine feels devastated by the restriction, while her mother points to a needlepoint sampler that claims real womanhood means drawing out the best in a man. To appease the parents, Francine's father arranges a date with Jeffrey Matthews, a family friend’s son. Francine reluctantly accepts, only to discover that Matthews is Moondoggie in disguise, blending into the plan meant to steer her away from the surfers. Gidget and Moondoggie resume their budding romance after the false date, returning to the beach to find Kahuna tearing down his shack as he starts a new life and takes a job as an airline pilot.
