What Happens at the End of Ghost Lab?
How Ghost Lab (2021) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.
The ending of Ghost Lab is layered with symbolism and emotional depth. Throughout the film, Dr. Gla sacrificed himself by shooting himself to enter the spirit world and help his friend Wee move on from their dangerous ghost experiments. His death was motivated by a desire to find peace and to show Wee that obsession and madness could lead to destruction. Gla’s connection to the Northern Lights, which he believed were the spirits of the dead, represented his quest to communicate with the afterlife. His final wish was for Wee to stop their obsession and find peace, symbolized by the beach Gla longed to visit—a place of tranquility and spiritual closure.
In the film’s climax, Gla’s spirit appears to Wee on a beach, illuminated by the northern lights, suggesting that Gla has finally found peace. However, Wee initially misunderstands this as a call to halt the experiments altogether. It is only after a conversation with Gla’s girlfriend, Mai, that Wee realizes Gla’s true message: he wanted him to stop the dangerous obsession, not the pursuit of understanding the supernatural itself. Mai’s dream of Gla on the beach with the northern lights hints that Gla has achieved spiritual peace.
Feeling inspired, Wee decides to continue their ghost research, but he chooses to do so with a clearer mind, erasing all previous files related to The Northern Light Quest. This act signifies his desire to honor Gla’s sacrifice by approaching their work responsibly and peacefully. Ultimately, Wee takes on the mantle of continuing their exploration, driven by a commitment to uncover the truth about the supernatural, but without the reckless obsession that once consumed them. The film reminds us that peace and enlightenment can come from understanding and acceptance, and that sometimes, sacrifices lead to new beginnings.
