A tortured artist and intellectual, called ‘The Professor,’ survives imprisonment under Nazi and Soviet regimes. He lives by a code akin to the Ten Commandments. After escaping a concentration camp he writes a memoir, drawing Soviet censorship and showing that the promised freedom of Communism is as oppressive as the German camps.
