Flipper

Sandy arrives in Coral Key to spend the summer with his Uncle Porter. He is immediately unimpressed, still longing for the Red Hot Chili Peppers concert he had hoped to attend. The setting introduces him to Porter's fishing life and the local vibe.

On his first days in town, Sandy meets Cathy, a local shopkeeper, and Kim, a girl his age. Porter's flirtatious relationship with Cathy adds complexity to the social scene, though it does not cheer up Sandy. He remains withdrawn and unsure about this summer.

While out on Porter's fishing trawler, they encounter Dirk Moran, Porter's rival. A pod of dolphins frolic nearby, but Dirk shoots at them, fatally wounding one dolphin. Sandy witnesses the danger and is introduced to the dolphin's world and its peril.

The dolphin that escapes Dirk's gunfire gains Sandy's attention, and he begins naming him Flipper. A bond forms between boy and sea mammal as Sandy talks to Flipper and watches him navigate the waters. The moment marks Flipper's place as a key character in the story.

The next morning, Sheriff Buck Cowan visits Porter and explains that they cannot keep Flipper in captivity. Legal concerns mean Flipper must roam free, at least for now. The bond between boy and dolphin tightens as they understand the stakes.

The next morning, Cathy’s son Marvin leads Kim to Flipper, who is beached and sick. Cathy helps treat Flipper and begins to suspect poisoning from toxic waste. Flipper’s illness becomes a catalyst for the town to confront the pollution issue.

Cathy determines that Flipper was poisoned by toxic waste, which is harming local fishing and wildlife. The group uses Flipper's echolocation and a camera attached to his head to locate the barrels. Flipper even locates his pod, dropping the camera in the process.

Porter rushes back to alert Sheriff Buck Cowan about the toxic barrels. The authorities mobilize to address the pollution and the risk to people and animals. The town begins to realize the scale of the threat.

Sandy, worried about Flipper, takes a perilous dinghy voyage to search alone, and he keeps his mission secret from most people except Cathy’s young son, Marvin. He trusts that Flipper can find his way back and that their friendship will prevail. The solo journey heightens the film's tension.

Dirk Moran is arrested by the sheriff for illegal dumping and for attempting to kill Sandy after seeing the danger he caused. The town's enforcement actions bring a measure of justice and protect Flipper and the local ecosystem. The arrest marks a turning point in protecting the wildlife.

The next morning, Sandy's mother and sister arrive to pick him up, and the town gathers at the dock for a bittersweet farewell. Flipper surfaces to see Sandy off, establishing a lasting bond between boy and dolphin. The final moment underscores themes of friendship and environmental stewardship.
