Set in Austro-Hungary in 1900, the story explores the complex relationship between maid Stefania Chornenko and noblewoman Adelia Anger. Both lost their mothers in a tragic fire, and Adelia’s father subsequently adopted Stefania’s orphaned siblings, raising the girls as close as sisters despite Stefania's service. Their bond evolves into a complicated love affair marked by manipulation, jealousy, but also genuine care and devotion. The situation intensifies when Adelia marries a sculptor, and Stefania’s former admirer, Joseph, returns as a married priest, forcing them to confront difficult truths and ultimately revealing the reality of their circumstances.
