In 1957 Gustaf Gründgens revived Goethe’s Faust, reprising Mephisto—a role he’d played since 1932. The production was acclaimed and ran for years. Peter Gorski filmed the stage performance in 1959 for his directorial debut, using medium and close‑up shots that reveal acting nuances rarely seen in the theater.
