Set in the summer of 1913, the story follows 17‑year‑old Jacob, a Danish high‑school student trapped in the uneasy transition between boyhood and manhood. He is preoccupied with his compulsive masturbation and, despite recognizing the housemaid Sophie’s flirtatious advances, he feels powerless to answer her overtures, leaving him mired in confusion and longing.
