You never know what an Eels concert will sound like—one night it’s vocoders and synths, the next gritty garage rock. In 2005, frontman Mark Oliver Everett (E) released the acclaimed double album Blinking Lights and Other Revelations and assembled his most ambitious seven‑piece lineup: a string quartet plus two multi‑instrumentalists handling lap steel, guitar, upright bass, mandolin, saw, melodica, celeste, pump organ, piano and a trash‑can/suitcase drum set. After a Boston debut they flew to New York, appeared on Late Night with David Letterman and delivered a flawless Town Hall performance, filmed for a concert movie.
