Three friends in Queens decide to drive cross-country to Los Angeles to escape their dull lives. They hit the road with a reckless optimism that promises freedom but invites trouble. This journey sets the tone for a perilous cross-country odyssey.

In Utah, the trio helps Elvis impersonator Daredelvis free his trailer from being stuck. The moment offers a bizarre roadside pause amid their larger quest. Grant even glimpses a mirage of a cowboy on horseback, foreshadowing the strange west to come.

While camping in the Arizona desert, a gang led by Missoula attacks. Milo is murdered during the assault, shattering the group’s confidence. Grant and Biscuit escape into the desert, and Grant experiences another vision of the cowboy.

The local sheriffs have no record of Missoula or his gang and cannot locate Milo’s body as evidence. The case is dismissed as fantasy, pushing Grant to vow revenge. Biscuit remains hesitant about chasing the killers.

Grant resolves to track Missoula and avenge Milo, even as Biscuit worries about the danger and consequences. They turn back toward Utah to begin their search. The journey intensifies as the mystery of Missoula deepens.

Heading toward Wyoming, the boys meet Jessie, a resourceful gas station and towing business owner. She becomes a crucial ally with knowledge of the roads and the people pursuing them. Jessie soon outfits them with a beat-up Buick Invicta and a roguish sense of purpose.

Jessie teaches Grant how to shoot and ride a horse, and a romance blossoms between them. The revived sense of competence gives the boys renewed resolve. Biscuit’s loyalty remains tested as danger and dreams collide.

In Wyoming, they enlist Daredelvis at a rodeo to help track Wes, a gang member. Wes is killed by a bull, not revealing Missoula’s location, adding a bitter twist to their pursuit. The trail grows colder as the gang remains elusive.

On the road to a ghost town, the men are pulled into a surreal moment where Witherspoon, a cowboy, appears with Native American warriors. The visions transport Grant back in time to a livelier past while Biscuit relives a tribal gathering. The experience deepens their bond with the mythic west.

After regaining their resolve, Grant discovers a matchbook in Milo’s jacket that leads them to a Montana saloon where Missoula and Blix hide. The chase culminates in a tense pursuit through town and into a cinema where danger looms. They manage to follow but are thwarted for the moment.

Grant and Biscuit open fire in the theater; Missoula and Blix escape, and the boys are arrested. Missoula and Blix then murder two sheriff’s deputies and break into the jail to finish the job, only to be thwarted when Jessie arrives to rescue them. The fragile stalemate keeps escalating toward a final showdown.

Jessie frees them; Grant kills Blix and wounds Missoula in a brutal pursuit across town. The climactic chase ends at an abandoned building where Grant tackles Missoula from a ledge. Missoula shoots Grant in the arm, but Grant returns fire and kills him.

After the battle, Witherspoon and the Native American warriors reappear alongside Milo, riding off into a dusty distance. Biscuit and Jessie arrive just as the vision fades, offering a quiet, reflective ending to Milo’s memory. The west keeps its legends intact as the trio moves forward.
