It follows a tender romance between a humble barber and a serf actress, set against a world where raw cruelty coexists with a thin façade of cultural enlightenment. Their love unfolds amid the harsh social realities of 19th‑century Russia, drawing on Nikolai Leskov’s short story “The Toupee Artist.”
