In December 1937, amid the Sino‑Japanese War, a Chinese doctor, his pregnant wife, teenage daughter and young son flee Shanghai for Nanjing, hoping the capital will shelter them as Japanese forces advance. They become trapped in the Rape of Nanking, facing the army rapes, killings of prisoners and civilians, and violating international conventions.
