Young Sung Neng Yee is adopted into a wealthy Chinese family and embraces Mao Zedong’s promise of a “new society.” As revolutionary policies turn her relatives’ fortunes into poverty, her enthusiasm wanes. The authorities detect her disillusionment and send her to a brutal labor camp, where the cruel Colonel Cheng oversees relentless forced work, harsh discipline and constant intimidation.
