Don Juan de Marana, taught by his father that women bring life, disillusionment and death, studies at the University of Pisa and moves to Rome, where the tyrannical Borgia family—Caesar, Lucrezia and Count Donati—rules. Though he wins the favor of many women, the one he cannot have haunts him. Ignoring Lucrezia and killing Donati in a duel incurs the Borgias’ vengeance, and he and his lover Adriana are condemned to death in the prison on the River Tigre.
