Pavel Ivanovich Chichikov schemes to buy the titles of dead serfs—“dead souls”—to use as collateral for a huge loan. He reaches a provincial town, courts landowners, and finds them petty and avaricious. Some stall, others refuse, a few renege, and some demand a share. Seeing them hopeless, Chichikov abandons the venture and moves on.
