Set in Odessa in 1910, the story follows a prominent Bolshevik operative sent by the Foreign Bureau of the RSDLP, who assumes the identity of a French timber merchant to smuggle prohibited literature through the port. To conceal his work he opens a variety‑show theater that quickly becomes famous, tours Russia, and even receives stage props from France, allowing him to complete his mission, and the plan ultimately succeeds.
