Dances with Dragon (1991) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Dances with Dragon (1991), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Lung Ka-Chun, Andy Lau, is the driven chairman of Lung’s Enterprise who nearly runs over Moon, Sharla Cheung Man, a job applicant from Lantau Island on his way to work. Despite her dramatic entrance, she lands the position and soon becomes entangled in a plan that also involves his mother, Lee Heung-Kam, who wants Lung to marry his younger cousin, Diana, Yvonne Yung. An arranged yacht date with Diana ignites a spark of disinterest, and Diana’s push sends Lung into the water, setting off a chain of events that pulls him into the world of Moon and her mother, Aunty Eleven, Deanie Yip Tak-Han.

Moon’s encounter with Lung spirals into a complicated blend of mistaken identity and family pressure. After a police chase ends with Lung hiding on Moon’s rooftop, the roof collapses, and he tumbles into Moon’s shower. Moon and Eleven beat him, convinced he is an illegal immigrant, and Eleven takes him in as a cheap laborer in her store. Lung agrees to stay, partly to avoid his mother’s meddling in his love life, and to keep a low profile as he secretly navigates his growing feelings for Moon.

To stay safe, Lung enlists the help of his loyal aide Uncle Fly, Richard Ng Man-Tat, who equips him with a cellphone and a shoe and directs him toward police sergeant Uncle Prawn, Wu Ma. Lung’s fragile disguise begins to unravel when one encounter at the police station leads to old suspicions resurfacing. A chaotic day includes a shoe damaged by pigs, the accidental loss of Prawn’s cherished pet cricket, and a tense game of cat-and-mouse that culminates in Lung convincing Prawn—through a blend of Cantonese opera and bravado—that he belongs to a larger, questionable network. The result is a revelation: Lung has been maneuvering the Triads to force Eleven to sell her store and land to fund a resort on Lantau Island.

With Eleven, Moon, and Lung converging at Lung’s Enterprise, Lung must confront his real identity while Martin Kung, his older cousin, and Chow Tai-pang, Bau Hon-Lam, scheme to develop the land and frame Lung for instigating the trouble. Security kicks Eleven and Moon out of the office, but resilience brings them back home. Moon senses Lung’s deeper feelings, while Fly returns with news that Lung will come back after striking it rich.

The story crescendos at a prestigious charity auction where Lung leverages every card he has. He outmaneuvers Chow Tai-pang, bidding for two key plots on Lantau Island and winning with a staggering HK$610 million. Eleven agrees to sell her store and accepts Lung’s offer of a new supermarket as part of the resort project, while Martin is reassigned to New Guinea as punishment. Right before the ceremonial ball, Lung declares he wants to dance with a very important woman—the one who has given him a chance to prove himself: his mother, a moment that unsettles Moon.

Back home, Moon’s hopes collide with reality, but a sweet twist arrives. Fly delivers a birthday cake from Lung, and Moon steps outside to find that Lung has fulfilled her dream: her home has become a palace, a symbol of the life he intends to build for her. With a fresh pair of glasses as a small, symbolic gift, Lung and Moon step into a final, unspoken dance of mutual trust and affection, as the couple walks forward together.

The film blends romance, family duty, and comic misadventure under the shimmer of Lantau’s landscapes, delivering a tale about ambition and belonging. Through its colorful array of characters, from Moon’s steadfast friend Charmy, May Lo Mei-Wei, to the scheming power players surrounding Lung, including Martin Kung, Alfred Cheung Kin-Ting and Chow Tai-pang, Bau Hon-Lam, the story offers a playful yet poignant look at how love and loyalty can navigate a maze of money, politics, and tradition.
