Nick, 11, moves into a large old house with his sisters Jennie and Clare, cared for by Swedish au pair Helga while their parents are away. At school he befriends Sam and is intimidated by scripture teacher Mr. Crabb, an occult enthusiast. Nick hears voices, receives computer messages, develops mysterious blisters and grazes, dreams of fire, wakes in an ash‑filled bed, and tells a psychiatrist he feels possessed by a demon.
