Set in a small rural village at the close of the 1890s, a young woman scandalizes conservative townspeople by entertaining male guests while her husband is away. When he is later found dead, suspicion quickly falls on her, and she is judged more for her perceived immorality than for any concrete proof. Her culpability continues to be debated today.
