The DA offered a viable manslaughter defense but Hufford's own attorney refused to listen to it. Because his legal counsel failed to present the defense, Hufford was convicted of manslaughter anyway and sentenced to prison.

Knowland recognized Hufford as someone he had previously encountered during his time as district attorney. By assigning him to this role, he created an opportunity to observe Hufford closely and assess his character, while also providing Hufford a chance at better conditions within the prison.

As Hufford drove Kay around town as part of his chauffeur duties, they spent significant time together. Kay became Hufford's greatest advocate, supporting him and giving him hope for a future beyond prison walls. This emotional connection grew into dreams of a life together.

Foreshadowing: Early scenes establish Hufford's confinement and isolation, making any human connection feel meaningful and transformative.

After years in prison, Hufford's experiences had hardened him and taught him the inmate code of loyalty. He refused to squeal on a fellow inmate, even when directly confronted by the warden. This commitment to silence cost him his desirable job and landed him in solitary confinement.

Knowland pressed Hufford to reveal the killer's identity, offering parole as an incentive. When Hufford refused to squeal on his cellmate Malloby, who had actually committed the murder, Knowland punished him by sending him to solitary confinement.

Despite Hufford's silence, Knowland continued using his influence as warden to push for his parole. Knowland saw potential in Hufford's reintegration and recognized the value of having a controllable asset outside prison walls. His persistence eventually paid off when Hufford was paroled.

The summary does not detail Malloby's specific fate. He was the actual killer of the informant in Knowland's office, but the focus remains on Hufford's predicament and his choice not to reveal the truth, which led to his own punishment rather than Malloby's capture.

Warden Knowland continued working behind the scenes to secure Hufford's release throughout his time in solitary. Despite Hufford's refusal to cooperate with the investigation, Knowland's efforts as warden were successful, and Hufford was eventually paroled, leaving the prison with a second chance at life.

Foreshadowing: Knowland's initial decision to give Hufford the chauffeur job suggested he saw value in maintaining a relationship with the prisoner.

The summary indicates other inmates attempted an escape that failed. This failure triggered the sequence of events where Hufford's cellmate Malloby murdered an informant in Knowland's office, pulling Hufford into the investigation and leading to his confrontation with the warden.

The summary does not provide specific details about what triggered the violent fistfight that resulted in a man's death. It simply establishes that Hufford was arrested after getting into a confrontation that ended fatally, which became the catalyst for his conviction and subsequent imprisonment.
