As the holiday season unfolds in Compton, California, Derrick’s joy is overshadowed by a creeping sense of injustice. Once filled with excitement over discovering a phenomenal talent, DJ Killionaire, Derrick’s dreams of success are shattered when he realizes that Tommy Maxell’s contract failed to reward him for his discovery, leaving Derrick feeling betrayed and financially stranded—his bank account mirroring the barren Christmas tree lot owned by his father, Big Earl.
With mounting pressure from financial obligations, a confrontation between Derrick and Big Earl ignites a rift in their usually harmonious home, transforming their festive surroundings into a scene of discord and disappointment. As Christmas Day approaches, Derrick finds himself caught in a snowglobe of uncertainty, contemplating his future amid the family’s struggles.
In the wake of Big Earl’s health challenges that necessitate recovery, an introspective moment pushes him to reconsider Derrick’s readiness for life’s responsibilities. He decides to take a gamble, co-owning their Christmas tree lot with Derrick, hoping this leap into autonomy would steer his son towards maturation. However, Derrick’s journey is worsened by Maxell’s cunning tactics, attempting to poach Sugar Stuff from under him.
Seeking revenge, Derrick comes up with an audacious plan, adopting the disguise of an exterminator to plot a heist on Maxell’s estate, ultimately stealing a luxurious $300,000 pink diamond ring. In hopes of selling it through connections like Delicious, a savvy pawn shop owner, Derrick is soon caught off guard during a botched robbery while dealing with a local criminal.
Time is ticking, and with Sugar Stuff’s contract in jeopardy, Derrick is pushed into a desperate financial corner. He decides to mortgage the Christmas tree lot to loan shark Ernesto Martinez, who imposes an urgent repayment deadline of $150,000 plus $25,000 in interest by Christmas Eve. However, Maxell maneuvers to acquire the loan from Martinez, planning to seize the lot as collateral while employing a crew of thieves to reclaim the stolen diamond ring.
Not one to back down, Derrick mobilizes his friends for a focused promotional campaign for Sugar Stuff, leading them to sell their CDs throughout Compton and generating significant attention. Their determination drives up demand for Sugar Stuff’s contract, a tactic aimed at persuading Maxell to cancel the loan in favor of securing the artists’ agreement with his label.
A twist of fate occurs when their frantic efforts result in a thrilling car accident involving a local hustler who sympathizes with their struggles. This unexpected bond leads to an alliance, with this former inmate’s group quickly broadcasting Sugar Stuff’s music across Compton, yielding an impressive $100,000 profit.
Despite Derrick’s newfound entrepreneurial success, Big Earl’s concerns linger. He decides to reclaim full ownership of the Christmas tree lot, revealing that the papers entitle him to control over Sugar Stuff as well. In a pivotal negotiation with Maxell, a deal is struck: in return for ownership of the land and the rights to sign Sugar Stuff, Maxell agrees to fund the construction of a community center and offers Derrick a role as a producer. As always, Big Earl’s focus remains on reinvesting profits into acquiring more properties, securing a future where hard-earned dreams can thrive.
