Don Jose, a Spanish cavalryman, becomes entranced by the fiery gypsy Carmen. She alternately lavishes love and scorns him, drawing him into a vortex of desire and jealousy. His obsession leads him to betray his honor, and the relentless pull of her contempt pushes him toward temptation and ultimate damnation.
