Janine, a bank employee offered a promotion to China, begins Mandarin classes and experiences a life-altering event. While traveling home from work on the subway, she is targeted by two young delinquents and an elderly woman, enduring a violent attack and sexual assault. Traumatized and struggling to cope, she witnesses the attackers assaulting another young woman and flees in terror. This experience shatters her aspirations for the promotion, her relationship, and her sense of independence, leaving her haunted by the memory. Seeking solace, she travels to the countryside to reconnect with her widowed father, who is also attempting to rebuild his life after loss.
