In Columbus, Ohio, Maren meets Sully, a man with similar cannibalistic cravings. However, her excitement turns to horror when she witnesses him consume the body of a dying woman, forcing her to flee from his side.

While attempting to shoplift in Indiana, Maren meets Lee, another eater. They form an unexpected bond after Lee defends a store customer, showcasing his darker tendencies and leading them on a perilous journey together.

During their travels, Maren visits Lee's hometown in Kentucky, where she becomes aware of his reluctance to speak about his father's absence. The visit underscores the pain and enigmas in their intertwined lives.

Maren and Lee encounter the two other eaters, Jake and Brad. To her shock, Maren learns that Brad engages in cannibalism out of choice rather than need, highlighting the diverse moralities within their world.

The couple's road trip takes a dark turn when they stop at a carnival, where Lee succumbs to his primal instincts and kills a male booth worker. This gruesome act deeply disturbs Maren, as she realizes the man had a family waiting for him.

Desperate for answers, Maren locates her grandmother, Barbara, who reveals that Maren's mother, Janelle, was adopted and is living in a psychiatric hospital. This revelation sends Maren on yet another quest for truth about her lineage.
