In 1928, Soviet worker Lyovuschka is cast as Trotsky in Eisenstein's film, but his acting aspirations are derailed when Trotsky falls out of favor with Stalin. Forced into exile, he assumes the identity of a wealthy baron and finds himself in a glamorous German resort, awaiting passage to Hollywood. While there, he begins a summer romance with the unconventional factory owner Octavia Flambow-Jansen, unaware that vampires are also present.
