The story follows Cveta, a young woman seized by an Ottoman bey and placed in his harem. While the bey seeks conversion to Islam, Cveta’s lover Spasa and a local priest, aided by great‑power diplomats, secure their freedom. On Cveta’s wedding day the bey attacks with his troops; Cveta is slain, Spasa kills the bey and faces the authorities.
