The story follows sixteen-year-old Arturs whose budding romance is shattered by the outbreak of World War I. After losing his mother and home, he seeks solace by joining the newly formed national battalions within the Russian Empire. However, the reality of war proves harsh and devastating, far removed from any notion of glory. Arturs faces immense loss as the conflict claims the lives of his father and brother, leaving him utterly alone. Facing a seemingly endless war with no prospect of a swift return, he finds the strength to persevere and eventually returns home to rebuild his life alongside a newly independent nation.
