In London, Bishop Soper denounces scandalous literature, especially the latest crime novel by Felix Chapel. An invited cousin, Irwin Molyneux, is asked to speak but is interrupted by William Kramps, a serial murderer on the run. After the meeting ends in uproar, Soper invites himself to dine and sleep at the Molyneux house.

Soper's presence unsettles the household; the servants have just left, and Mrs. Molyneux pretends to be called away while Eva serves the meal. Soper questions Molyneux's feeble excuses for his wife's absence, and once he has gone to bed, Mr. and Mrs. Molyneux flee to a boarding house in Chinatown, unaware that the next room houses William Kramps.

In the morning, Soper rings Scotland Yard, sparking widespread curiosity about the vanished couple. A newspaper hires the famed crime writer Felix Chapel to investigate, though the 'writer' is really Molyneux in a false beard. He realizes that his plots come from Eva, who confesses that she and Billy the milkman are clueless about real mysteries.

Mr. Molyneux, in disguise as Felix Chapel, struggles to craft a real mystery while investigating the case. He discovers that his 'investigation' is built on Eva's stories rather than actual clues, revealing the odd dynamic behind the investigation.

Meanwhile, Eva remains in Chinatown, and she catches the attention of William Kramps, who flirts with her with flowers and flattery. Kramps' interest complicates the case as two different narratives swirl around the disappearance. Eva hints that their information is unreliable, emphasizing the farcical nature of the investigation.

Molyneux returns to confront Kramps and declares that he is Felix Chapel, while Eva is the missing Mrs Molyneux. The unlikely pair toast their revelation and stumble back to the Molyneux house to continue the night's revelry.

At the Molyneux house, the men discover Soper disguised as a kilted Scottish soldier, attempting to recover an incriminating signed photo of a showgirl, while a sleeping police detective lies nearby. An angry crowd forms outside, clamoring to hang the bishop for the murder of Mrs. Molyneux.

Mrs. Molyneux slips in through the garden and finds William Kramps sleeping naked beside the pond. She then hides in a closet for safety as the situation grows more perilous.

The sleeping detective wakes and claims that the body was revealed to him in a dream. He opens the closet and finds Mrs. Molyneux safe, bringing a bizarre but crucial turn to the mystery.

William Kramps bursts in and proclaims he has killed Mr. Molyneux, and he is arrested, though he swears he will escape. The immediate danger passes as justice seems to catch up with the killer.

Mr. Molyneux decides to stay as Felix Chapel, recognizing that the disguise is more lucrative and entertaining than his real life. He embraces the persona as his ongoing livelihood, leaving the case behind as a permanent role.
