What Happens in Bedroom Mazurka: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Bedroom Mazurka (1970) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Set at the all-boys private boarding school Krabbesøgaard, the story follows a turning point as the school's rector is named the new minister of culture.

To fill Bosted's seat, the rector Axel Strøbye Bosted must find a replacement. The choice falls on the young and popular teacher Ole Søltoft Mikkelsen, who is popular among the students for wanting to turn the school into a mixed-gender institution that admits girls.

But a snag stands in his way: Mikkelsen is a virgin, and school policy requires the rector to be a married man. With only thirty days before the government is officially announced, Bosted must resign, or the position will fall to the despised teacher Holst, known as “the doormat,” played by Paul Hagen.

The senior students—Torben, Vagn, Ole and Michael—who are already worldly, set out on a playful mission to help Mikkelsen gain experience. They enlist help from Bosted's neglected wife, Erna Bostedt, portrayed by Annie Birgit Garde, as well as the chairman's daughters, Line Barnewelder and Erica de Renan, played by Birte Tove and Anne Grete Nissen respectively. They even hire a stripper to guide Mikkelsen through the world of romance—the performer Pippi Langstrømpe, brought to life by Mette von Kohl.

As the plan unfolds, Mikkelsen begins to glimpse the complexities of love and attraction, while the clock ticks toward the ultimatum: can he secure a wife within 30 days, or will the position indeed pass to Holst, the dreaded “doormat”? The story blends humor, mischief, and a touch of rebellion as the boys push boundaries and test the boundaries of tradition in their bid to reshape the school—and its future rector.

Bedroom Mazurka Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Bedroom Mazurka (1970): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Why does the school require the rector to be married?

The school has a policy that requires the rector to be a married man. This is a traditional requirement rooted in the institution's values about family and respectability. Since Mikkelsen is a virgin and unmarried, this becomes the major obstacle preventing him from taking the position.

Foreshadowing: The marriage requirement is mentioned early when Bosted explains the qualifications for the position.

Why is Mikkelsen chosen as the new rector?

Mikkelsen is chosen because he is popular among students and advocates for modernizing the school by admitting girls. The board hopes his fresh ideas will transform Krabbesøgaard, and his popularity suggests he can unite the community around reform.

Foreshadowing: The rector mentions wanting someone with vision who can bring change to the school.

What happens when the 30-day deadline ends?

The film ends with the 30-day deadline expiring without revealing whether Mikkelsen successfully secured a wife. His future at Krabbesøgaard remains uncertain, and Holst stands ready to take over the position if needed. The outcome is intentionally left unresolved.

Foreshadowing: Throughout the film, the countdown creates mounting tension as the deadline approaches.

Why do the senior students help Mikkelsen?

The senior students, Torben, Vagn, Ole, and Michael, support Mikkelsen because they want him to become rector and implement his plan to admit girls to the school. They see his success as the only way to avoid Holst taking over, which they view as undesirable.

Foreshadowing: The students immediately rally around Mikkelsen after his appointment is announced.

Who is Holst and why is he called the doormat?

Holst is a teacher at the school who is widely disliked by both students and staff. He is nicknamed "the doormat" because he is seen as weak, spineless, and unable to command respect. If Mikkelsen fails to marry in time, Holst will become the new rector, a prospect the students greatly fear.

Foreshadowing: The threat of Holst taking over is mentioned when the 30-day deadline is introduced.

What is the stripper's role in the plan?

The boys hire the stripper Pippi Langstrømpe to give Mikkelsen a crash course in romance and intimacy. Since Mikkelsen is a virgin with no experience with women, they believe exposing him to adult relationships will help him understand dating and courtship, ultimately helping him find a wife faster.

Foreshadowing: The plan to hire someone to "educate" Mikkelsen is mentioned after the students realize his inexperience.

How do Erna Bostedt and the chairman's daughters get involved?

The senior students recruit Bosted's neglected wife Erna and the chairman's daughters Line and Erica to help guide Mikkelsen through romance. Each woman offers him private lessons in human sexuality, providing social connections and practical experience to improve his chances of finding a wife within the deadline.

Foreshadowing: The students approach Bosted's house on Day 11 to recruit allies.

Why does Mikkelsen want to turn the school into a mixed-gender institution?

Mikkelsen believes Krabbesøgaard should admit girls, making it a co-educational school rather than an all-boys institution. This modern vision for reform is central to why the board selects him as rector, as they hope he will bring progressive change to the traditional school.

Foreshadowing: Mikkelsen's plans for admitting girls are mentioned when he is introduced as the candidate.

Why is it significant that Mikkelsen is a virgin?

Mikkelsen's virginity becomes the central obstacle because the school policy requires the rector to be married. With only 30 days to secure a wife, his complete lack of romantic experience makes the task nearly impossible, forcing the students to devise elaborate schemes to help him.

Foreshadowing: The revelation about his virginity comes immediately after the marriage requirement is announced.
