On a frigid winter Saturday in Chicago during 2002, Calvin Palmer, Jr. (Ice Cube) reaches a breaking point, feeling overwhelmed by the struggles of keeping his late father’s barbershop afloat. Frustrated by the lack of funds and driven by an eagerness for quick financial gain, he makes the drastic decision to sell the barbershop to a conniving loan shark named Lester Wallace (played by Keith David). Calvin assures both his loyal employees and customers that nothing would change, yet Lester has sinister plans to transform the shop into a strip club.
Calvin dreams of investing the money from the sale into a recording studio in pursuit of making his mark in the music industry. However, when his wife Jennifer (Jazsmin Lewis) discovers his plans, she reminds him that their business had been prospering until he started borrowing money for his get-rich-quick schemes.
As chaos unfolds, two aspiring criminals, JD (Anthony Anderson) and his best friend Billy (Lahmard Tate), find themselves in a comical predicament; they have stolen an ATM and are desperately trying to crack it open in Billy’s apartment. Meanwhile, Calvin’s dedication to his community shines through when he offers words of encouragement to Sandeep, the local convenience store owner, helping him remain steadfast in keeping his establishment operational amidst difficulty. Sandeep reveals that the ATM is new and doesn’t contain cash yet is quite valuable, with banks willing to pay a reward of $50,000 for its recovery.
Recognizing the significance of the barbershop to the local community and its employees, Calvin has a change of heart and urgently seeks to reclaim his business. However, Lester demands $20,000—double what he initially paid Calvin—along with a tight deadline of 7 P.M. Complicating matters further, JD and Billy continue to draw attention while trying to hide the stolen ATM, creating a whirlwind of comedic misfortune.
With limited time left, Calvin confesses to his employees about the sale and the imminent closure of the barbershop, leading to a dramatic encounter with the police who arrest one of the barbers, Ricky (Michael Ealy). It is revealed that Ricky is not the thief, but rather wrongly implicated due to his cousin JD’s reckless behavior. In a heart-wrenching moment, Calvin uses the funds from Lester to bail Ricky out, aiming to put an end to the tumult.
Once reunited with Ricky, tensions escalate as Ricky expresses his anger toward JD for his betrayal. Calvin attempts to mediate, and after a heated moment, Ricky discards a gun he finds, symbolizing his desire to evade further trouble. The escalating chaos leads them straight to confront Lester, who is caught off guard by Calvin and Ricky’s demands to reclaim the barbershop.
As the confrontation reaches its peak, Lester’s henchman appears ready to escalate tensions, but the timely arrival of the police tips the scales, leading to the capture of JD and Billy. In an unexpected turn of events, Calvin and Ricky recover the stolen ATM, earning the generous reward that allows them to revitalise the barbershop. With new hope and fresh vigor, the barbershop reopens, thriving like never before. Meanwhile, in a joyful twist, Calvin’s wife Jennifer gives birth to their baby boy, marking a poignant moment amid the chaos.
