In the late 1800s, the life of 14-year-old Lise is irrevocably altered. As the eldest of several siblings and the first in her family to attend school, she holds great hope for the future. However, when her mother experiences complications during childbirth, Lise's youthful optimism is challenged. As the night progresses and the labor continues, she confronts the possibility of prematurely assuming the responsibilities of a woman and head of her family.
