In the Mojave Desert, Sandra Thomas’s car breaks down after a road-rage incident with Santini, a notorious scam artist. A soft-spoken passerby named Jake Nyman stops to help, presenting himself as a Los Angeles psychiatrist on a spur-of-the-moment pleasure trip and offering Sandra a ride to Pearblossom to reunite with her down-on-her-luck sister, Alice. The plan hits a snag when Jake’s car runs dry on gas, delaying the reunion and nudging the trio into a fragile, uneasy dynamic.

During a pause at a roadside rest stop, a surprising connection forms between Sandra and Jake; they grow closer as conversation opens a crack in the day’s tension. Yet the moment is shattered when Santini reappears, dragging Sandra into a drunken confrontation that ends with a blow to her face. As the chase tightens, Santini catches up on the highway and wrecks his car while pursuing them. Alice attempts a rescue, but Santini’s injuries render him unable to speak, and he dies soon after. The drama accelerates when Sheriff Frank discovers a human tongue in the toilet of Jake’s motel room and an APB confirms Jake as a prime suspect in a serial-killer investigation. Meanwhile, Jake turns the knife on Alice, confessing in chilling detail that he killed her sister and recounting childhood memories while revealing Sandra’s mutilated corpse hidden in the trunk of his car. Alice, horrified and determined, strikes back with a shovel and escapes to a nearby barn, where Jake—who had earlier lifted a gun from a roadside store—ambushes her.

In the barn’s shadow, a final gambit emerges as Alice seeks survival and a twist on Jake’s twisted creed. She proposes a coin toss: if the coin lands heads, she walks away free; if tails, he kills her. The plan hinges on a counterfeit Kennedy half-dollar that Jake had swapped with Santini, but the coin is discovered to be fake. Realizing the ruse, Jake heads back to reclaim the coin for a second toss, only to be intercepted by Sheriff Frank and Deputy Sam in a fatal confrontation that ends the pursuit—and the lives of all three men involved—in a brutal, decisive crash.

Throughout the ordeal, the film threads a tense mood of mistrust, chance, and moral ambiguity, pulling Sandra, Alice, Jake, and Santini into a deadly feedback loop where loyalty, deception, and fate collide in the desert’s unforgiving stillness.
