Adapted from A. Zharov's poem, the 1934 Soviet film explores the birth of the mass song. It follows country boy Timosha, who quits playing his accordion after being appointed Komsomol leader. Realizing he must counter the melancholy kulak tunes of Tlskliby (“Mournful”), he returns to his instrument and rallies his peers with upbeat, lively music.
