In January 1997 a U.S. medical team—five nurses, four anesthesiologists and three plastic surgeons—travels to Vietnam’s Mekong Delta for two weeks of volunteer work. They operate on 110 children with birth defects and injuries, while speaking to the film crew about why they made the trip and what it means to them. The documentary follows the surgeries, the children, their families and the surrounding community, and closes with Dionne Warwick’s rendition of “What the World Needs Now Is Love.”
