A Day and a Half

Artan takes Louise hostage because she failed to show up for a planned meeting where he was supposed to see their daughter Cassandra. Desperate and angry after she didn't turn up, he storms the clinic with a gun, locks down the building, and demands she come with him to get Cassandra. The situation escalates from a custody dispute into a full hostage crisis.

Louise reveals that she had intended to meet Artan for his planned visit with Cassandra, but she fell asleep on the sofa. She explains that they can no longer be together as a couple, but promises that Artan will still be able to see Cassandra despite their separation.

Artan lost custody of Cassandra after he was convicted of assault for pushing Louise's father Stefan. He claims he tripped, but the incident resulted in a three-month prison sentence, which the courts used to rule against his custody rights.

Louise suffered from postpartum psychosis after Cassandra was born, a serious mental health condition that required treatment. During the months she was receiving treatment for this condition, Artan began a relationship with another woman, which further damaged their already strained marriage.

The necklace Louise gives Artan contains a pendant that features their daughter Cassandra's heartbeat recorded from when she was born. This emotional gift symbolizes Louise's attempt to give Artan a tangible connection to Cassandra, acknowledging his role as Cassandra's father despite their breakup.

After their heart-to-heart conversation where Louise explains why their relationship cannot be repaired but assures him he will see Cassandra, Artan decides to unload his gun and give it to Louise. She rolls down the car window and drops it on the ground, symbolizing his surrender of violence and control. This act represents his acceptance of the situation and his choice to resolve things peacefully rather than through force.

Artan is arrested by the tactical team outside Arlanda Airport after they surround the car. However, the ending carries hope because Louise has promised he will still be able to see Cassandra, and he looks at her with a hopeful expression as the police lead him away. The arrest represents a painful but necessary conclusion that may eventually allow him to rebuild a relationship with his daughter.

Stefan's hostile reaction stems from his racist and xenophobic views toward Artan, whom he views as unworthy of his daughter. When Artan and Louise arrive to pick up Cassandra, Stefan uses a rifle to try to prevent them from leaving with the child. Police officer Lukas disarms him after a struggle, removing the immediate threat.

Artan initially plans to flee to Albania with Louise and Cassandra, likely seeking to escape the legal consequences of his actions and start fresh in his home country. However, the airlines refuse to accept a man traveling with hostages, forcing him to abandon this escape route and continue driving toward Arlanda Airport instead.

Lukas enters the clinic alone because the trained hostage negotiators are hours away from the location. With Artan demanding to leave with Louise immediately, Lukas volunteers to go in as the local police officer to talk Artan down and try to resolve the situation peacefully. He remains with them throughout the journey.
