Eduard von Bittermagen and his friend Professor Pfiff share a hobby of wagering on anything. Bittermagen bets that his mischievous nephew Tommi will end up with the Professor’s daughter Julia, even though neither is interested. Pfiff wagers against it, but Bittermagen stages a mock “deathbed,” offering his fortune to the pair if they solve a problem.
