Maria, Paul, their daughter, and Claire begin their journey across Spain, heading towards Madrid. Their trip takes them through various locations, with a sense of adventure and uncertainty. The group encounters different environments, including a small town and the bustling city of Madrid.

While traveling to Madrid, the group pauses in a small town due to a severe thunderstorm. They learn about a dangerous fugitive on the loose, who has killed his wife and her lover. The storm forces them to seek refuge in the town’s only hotel, which is overcrowded with other travelers also stranded.

Maria, who struggles with alcoholism and lives in a dream-like state, drinks a bottle of alcohol outside during the storm. She observes Paul and Claire kissing on a balcony, indicating her subtly encouraged desire for a closer connection with her husband.

While outside, Maria sees the fugitive hiding on a rooftop. Despite the danger, she decides to help him escape the town. She drives him to a remote spot in the desert, providing him with a hiding place away from the authorities.

The next day, Paul and Claire look for the fugitive in the desert, but he has already committed suicide. Maria, Paul, and Claire agree to keep his death a secret as they continue their journey towards Madrid, trying to move past the tragic event.
