Roadside Got Ghost

Cai, a cunning operator who runs a small-time scheme with his two accomplices Fu and Shou, returns home after a successful con where they posed as a religious priest. Richard Low plays Cai. Hunger drives the trio to improvise: late at night they nab oranges from roadside offerings meant for the Hungry Ghost Festival, and Cai grumbles that the fruit is tasteless. A phone call soon after promises Cai a first-class return ticket to the United States from a lucky draw, which he dismisses with a sharp rebuke.

The trio then pivots to a bigger scam. They launch a hotline that dials from a phone book, delivering a random 4D lottery number to every call recipient. Anyone who wins must pay Cai a 20% commission—either under the pretense of temple construction or through intimidation by loansharks and thugs. The operation expands into a company, and they even pressure for copyright protection to guard against imitators who might copy their trick.

One day Cai is told to expect a number from a caller claiming to be a competitor, and the response he gives is mixed: he dismisses the call, chides Fu and Shou for not securing a copyright, yet still tries the given number. To his surprise, the number yields him first and second prize. A follow-up call from the same caller arrives, but Cai again ignores it.

A pale, ominous man appears, demanding his commission and claiming it was his grandmother who granted Cai the fortune. Cai teases and refuses to pay, scoffing at the warning that he will be run over by a car. He steps into the road to prove the scare is a hoax, only to be crushed when a car overturns from an overhead highway. The driver, revealed to be an elderly spirit, tells Cai not to steal oranges again. As Cai dies, hundreds of oranges roll toward him on the road, encapsulating the folk-horror punch of the tale.

The disasters in life begin from ignoring the details.

Forest Got Ghost

In Forest Got Ghost, two NS reservists, Nan and Lei, trek through a jungle as part of their topographic training. They lose their way and opt for a shortcut through a haunted area, where they spot a gravestone for a young woman. John Cheng plays Nan and Wang Lei plays Lei. Night brings a chilling sight—a woman in a red dress watching them from a distance.

The next day they find the shortcut they were told to take and, after running out of water, encounter Yin Yin, a plump girl carrying a white umbrella who sells drinks and invites them to shelter at her home. Inside, the red-dressed woman reappears, and the pair flee only to be trapped near a gravestone that turns out to belong to Yin Yin herself. Yin Yin explains that she is not a ghost and that the grave belongs to her twin sister she grew up with. She persuades Nan and Lei to stay at her house, trying to reassure them with a display of supposed magic—an ability she says she learned from her father, a magician thought to be the mentor of the legendary David Copperfield.

After a demonstration, Nan and Lei agree to participate in one of Yin Yin’s tricks, allowing themselves to be strapped to chairs and noosed for the experience. The trap becomes clear: their hosts, Yin Yin and the other female ghost, are preparing to depart with two new people to take their places. The epilogue fast-forwards to the following year, when another batch of reservists arrives for training. Two fresh soldiers get lost on a similar shortcut and appear to stumble into the same forest, ending up in front of Nan and Lei once again.

Be prepared to face consequences if taking shortcuts.
