What We Do in the Shadows

Viago, a 17th-century gentleman vampire, travels to New Zealand in the 1940s with hopes of finding his lost love, Katherine. His arrival sets the stage for the quirky household he shares with three other vampires in Wellington.

In the present day, Viago, Vladislav, Deacon, and Petyr live together in a flat in Wellington's Te Aro suburb, each possessing unique supernatural talents. They share camaraderie despite their eccentric lifestyles and differing personalities.

As dusk falls, the trio of vampires—Viago, Vladislav, and Deacon—head out onto the busy streets to hunt for victims. Their antics are complicated by their human assistant, Jackie, who assists them in their nocturnal endeavours.

Deacon recruits Jackie to help entice virgins for their blood feast. Jackie seeks revenge against a woman from her past and ends up bringing her and her ex-boyfriend Nick to the vampires' flat, under the guise of a party.

The encounter turns deadly when the woman meets a brutal end at the hands of the vampires. Nick survives, but is soon turned into a vampire himself by Petyr after a shocking twist of fate.

Two months later, Nick is welcomed into the vampire household, creating an unexpected bond with Stu, a computer analyst. Together, they explore modern technology and lifestyles, creating interesting dynamics within the group.

Viago uses the Internet to reconnect with Katherine, now a 96-year-old widow in a nursing home in Wellington. This rekindling of his long-lost love adds a romantic subplot to the ongoing chaos of their lives.

Tensions arise as Nick struggles with his new vampire identity, earning the disdain of Deacon for his careless behavior and popularity. Nick's recklessness ultimately leads to a vampire hunter infiltrating their home.

A vampire hunter sets out to expose Petyr to sunlight, resulting in a tragic encounter that claims the life of the ancient vampire. The remaining vampires fuel their anger towards Nick for his part in the incident.

Months later, the undead community gathers for the annual Unholy Masquerade, filled with vampires, zombies, and witches. The event takes a surprising turn when they discover Nick and his friends are among the guests.

Vladislav faces off against his former girlfriend’s new partner, leading to a chaotic situation where tensions rise. The vampires must escape after a dramatic confrontation that puts them in danger.

After their escape from the masquerade, the vampires stumble into a pack of werewolves. The chaos results in the tragic news of Stu's apparent death, leaving the vampires in mourning.

In a twist of fate, Stu returns to the flat as a werewolf after surviving the last attack. His transformation highlights the bond between vampires and werewolves, leading to a new understanding.

Viago finally transforms Katherine into one of the undead, fulfilling his long-held dream. Their reunion solidifies a new chapter in their eternal lives together and adds more chaos to the already quirky household.

As the film concludes, viewers see how the characters' lives have evolved. Relationships mended and new alliances formed as each character grapples with their unconventional existence in a world where chaos reigns.
