Set in 16th‑century Japan, peasants Genjuro and Tobei trade their earthenware to soldiers despite a sage’s warning against profiting from war. Genjuro dreams of wealth and the enigmatic Lady Wakasa, while Tobei longs to become a samurai. Their ambitions threaten to ruin themselves and their devoted wives, Miyagi and Ohama, as the pursuit of desire brings tragedy and loss.
