Mary Gillespie takes over the Colonel Gillespie Circus after her father's death, working with her publicist boyfriend Jim to bring back packed audiences. Star equestrian Señor Martinet holds $60,000 in notes signed by the Colonel and must repay them within 24 hours. When a shadowy figure is spotted on the lot and Martinet is killed during his central‑ring act, suspicion falls on many, including his mistreated hunchback assistant Vindecco.
