Aurelio Morelli, an aging novelist ignored by readers, grows bitter toward decaying youth. After a night with a call‑girl ends in murder, the police have no leads, but journalist Bossi suspects him. Instead of turning him in, Bossi forces Morelli to recount the killing for his paper, letting him complete memoirs that admit earlier crimes.
