Mathilde and her husband, who works in a minister’s office, are poor but she dreams of fine clothes. He indulges her wishes, and when they are invited to a prestigious party she longs to appear elegant. She borrows a dazzling diamond necklace from a wealthy friend, only to lose it, and must replace it at great cost, plunging them into hardship.
