In 1959, a small German village prepares its annual fair. While securing a carousel to the ground, a fair worker uncovers a skeleton clutching a steel helmet and a machine gun. The remains are identified as Robert Mertens, an ordinary soldier who deserted in 1944 and returned home, only to find that neither former friends, the local minister nor even his own parents were willing to help him.
