Sophie is taken from her orphanage one early morning by the Big Friendly Giant, whom she initially sees carrying out mysterious tasks. He quickly puts her at ease and explains that his job is to collect, catalog and deliver pleasant dreams to children. That night they set out together, but a group of malevolent giants pursue them, planning to eat the world's children.
