After the horror of the Civil War, ignorant Christopher Newman makes a fortune and goes to France seeking cultural treasures. He becomes involved in Paris nightlife and, after an affair with a haughty painter, falls for the daughter of the late Marquis de Bellegarde, scarred by an abusive husband. Her elder brother supports their ruthless mother; younger brother Valentin, smitten with the painter, allies with Christopher.
