In Venice, eight‑year‑old Roger Court waits for a long‑delayed reunion with his father, the British diplomat Major Court (Trevor Howard), whom he has not seen in three years. Since his mother abandoned him, Roger has lived with his Aunt Rose, and his hopes for a fresh start are tempered by the uncertainties of a strained family bond.
